Teaching Practicum II / 2nd period

2nd Teaching Practice

To provide rapport  to students   and to  have a good  communication with them are  some of the most important teaching strategies to make learning easy and not stressful.

In this second practice I had to start  teaching phrasal verbs, at the beginning of the class everything was OK because the warm-up made them  feel relaxed and they  refreshed their English knowledge. However,  their moods changed a little bit  when they read the topic on the board; when they saw it, they scared and told me that Phrasal verbs are difficult to manage; besides, I noticed that  their fear was because there was new vocabulary that they didn´t know, so  my response was to tell them  that they didn´t have to worry, and that while they practice the topic, they will master the it.Also,  I let them know that it is normal  to panic when there are new challenges  ahead,  and that they had to overcome them by  studying and giving  one step at a time.

To  reduce their fear i had already prepared a matching exercise in which they had to match the phrasal verbs with the right meaning. I asked some of them to go to the front and match; with this exercise  i noticed that they were  stressed  because they  wanted to give the  right answers  in their first try. I  noticed that they stood in front of the board and were thinking  twice to match. As part of the development of the  exercise , I corrected the mistakes.
After, the teaching,  some of them thanked me for the new vocabulary to enhance their knowledge.

  2. Yeah! I agree with you chicken Sarita. Our attitude could affect in many ways our students´motivation, and for that reason we need to be very careful in not allowing students to notice our fairs or concerns...

  3. I agree with you when you mention that communication between teacher-students makes the class easier and more meaningful. Let me tell you that the thing I liked the most of you class was that you challenged and encouraged your students to learn new things. You mention that some students felt uncomfortable with the new topic, but the good part is that you never gave up toward their attitude and gave your best all the time. You have to feel flattered about yourself because the fact that the students thanked you at the end, means that they enjoyed the class. Very good CHEJEINNNNN!

  4. Great Claudia! It´s good you encourage the students by saying that giving up is not the best solution... Nevertheless, its normal they feel like that and have doubts when doing the exercises.
